To the extent possible, try to intern each summer while you are in college. It will differentiate you from other graduates, advance your skills, and improve your understanding of course subjects. Paid internships are available in most fields. If you are unable to apply for internships through your program or school, try one or more of the following.
- Contact the career services office of a competing school.
- Seek and apply to participate in diversity internship programs.
- Apply directly to the companies for which you’d like to intern.
Generally, the last requires submitting your resume and a succinct cover letter to the HR department or department leaders of a large number of companies.
